Wait or preorder? How to decide on an anime figure reissue

A reissue is a second production run of a figure that sold before. Some are limited, some come with small extras, and many tempt you to lock in a preorder the day they open. This guide gives the rules Figure Trends uses each week to decide between Buy, Skip and Wait. These are editorial opinions, not guarantees, and they pair with the real Canada cost in the landed cost guide.

Our rule of thumb

Buy only if the character is already on your account or shelf. Preorder one figure at most if the character is new to you. Wait if the release is 12 or more months out, unless you are a whale and it is already a grail for you. Price the Canada landed cost before checkout, and if the total does not clear, wait.

When waiting makes sense

The release is a year or more away

Locking in money for 12 months or more is the easiest way to regret a preorder. Our list marks these as Wait and says to recheck closer to cancellation deadlines.

You are price sensitive

On a limited reissue such as the MegaHouse Dragon Ball Desktop Real McCoy Goku and Bulma set in our current list, we say to wait a few weeks after the window opens if price matters to you. Check the live shop price before you decide.

The figure is mostly rank heat

A high spot on a reservation board shows demand, not whether you will love the figure. We say skip if you are only chasing rank. High volume original character scales in particular often preorder hard and then soften on the used market, so recheck used prices months after release before spending big.

When preordering makes sense

It is a character you already collect

If the character is already a main on your shelf, a limited reissue is the kind of figure to secure early.

The release window is short and the total clears

A short window means less time with your money tied up. Write the landed cost first. If it clears your budget, a preorder is reasonable.

Know the cancellation rules before you commit

AmiAmi's support page says pre order items may be requested for cancellation up until their release date, and adds: "Keep in mind this is a request and may not always be accepted." It also says cancellation requests do not include pre order items after the order has been invoiced, and that "misuse of the 'Request Cancellation' function or excessive cancellations may lead to restrictions on your account."

So treat a preorder as a commitment, not a free hold. Check the exact status label on the listing before you pay.

A quick checklist

If you answer no to the first, yes to the second, or no to the third, wait.

Frequently asked questions

Should I preorder a figure reissue right away?

Only if the character is already a main for you and the Canada landed cost clears your budget. If you are price sensitive, our rule is to wait a few weeks after the window opens.

Can I cancel a preorder if I change my mind?

AmiAmi's support page says pre order items may be requested for cancellation up until their release date, but a request may not always be accepted, and it does not cover pre order items after the order has been invoiced. Check the shop's current rules before you pay.

Do figures get cheaper after release?

We do not promise that. Our observation is that high volume original character scales often preorder hard and then soften on the used market, so recheck used prices months after release.

What does Wait mean on your list?

It means the release is far out, the demand looks like rank heat, or the Canada landed cost does not clear. It is a recheck later, not a permanent no. See this week's list.
